O hábito de fumar maconha pode fazer com o que as mamas dos homens se desenvolvam. Esta é a afirmação de Anthony Youn, cirurgião plástico de Detroit, nos Estados Unidos, que explica que a erva reduz os níveis de testosterona nos homens, causando desequilíbrio hormonal e, consequentemente, o crescimento excessivo da região. De acordo com Youn, o desenvolvimento das mamas masculinas, também conhecido como ginecomastia, afeta entre 33% e 41% dos homens com idades entre 25 e 44 anos, assim como 60% de adolescentes e pelo menos 55% após os 50 anos. Na maioria dos casos, o problema se resolve com o tempo, mas, nos últimos anos, a cirurgia para redução das mamas masculinas se tornou uma opção bastante viável, sendo a quinta plástica mais comum entre os homens norte-americanos.
O especialista ainda observou que, em animais, a maconha pode causar também o encolhimento dos testículos e anomalias no esperma. No entanto, nos humanos, os efeitos não são totalmente conhecidos, embora a diminuição da testosterona nos usuários da erva seja comprovada. “A associação entre a maconha e ginecomastia não foi confirmada, mas parece ser bastante plausível”, concluiu Youn.
